Session Description:
Professional growth rarely occurs when we feel completely ready. Through personal stories spanning first-generation college experiences, career pivots, international opportunities, leadership transitions, and balancing career and family responsibilities, this session explores how embracing discomfort can become a catalyst for growth. Participants will learn how to recognize growth opportunities, navigate uncertainty with confidence, and take meaningful steps toward personal and professional development.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore the relationship between discomfort, resilience, and professional growth.
- Identify factors that commonly inhibit individuals from pursuing career development opportunities.
- Assess personal and professional situations where calculated risk-taking may support growth and leadership development.
- Apply techniques for navigating uncertainty, change, and career transitions.
About Somer Torres:
Somer is an audit director in the Tulsa office of Forvis Mazars with more than 17 years of professional accounting experience, including a two-year firm secondment in Perth, Australia.
During her career, she has served a variety of clients in the transportation & distribution, manufacturing, energy, and services industries. In addition to performing audit engagements, Somer has been actively involved in strategic objectives and projects, including women's initiatives, mentoring circles, audit software user testing, and practice reviews.
Somer is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, Oklahoma Society of CPAs, Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance, and Kansas State University Accounting Advisory Council. Somer was honored as an OSCPA Trailblazer in 2019.
She is a 2007 graduate of Kansas State University, Manhattan, with a B.S. degree in business, and a 2009 graduate of Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, with an M.B.A. degree.
