TOPIC:

Wills, Probate, & Why Estate Planning Matters

SESSION DESCRIPTION:

Everyone needs an estate plan, yet many people avoid thinking about estate planning because they are scared to think about bad things happening or they are intimidated by the idea of working with an attorney on legal matters they don’t understand.   However, the best time to plan for your incapacity or death is while you’re still healthy and before there is a crisis.  Estate planning doesn’t have to be complex – it can and should be customized to meet your goals, needs, and wishes.  A thoughtfully considered estate plan can help you feel empowered and have peace of mind that your loved ones, assets, and legacy will be protected.

This presentation will clarify common misunderstandings, goals, and positive benefits of estate planning.  You can hope for the best while planning for the worst without being overwhelmed by the critical decisions involved in creating or updating your own estate plan.

 LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

·         Learn about the purpose of estate planning, different methods available to accomplish your goals based on your circumstances, and foundational concepts you need to understand to make informed decisions about what type of estate plan is best for you.

·         Understand the probate process, the common estate planning mistakes that trigger probate and other unnecessary consequences, and how you can avoid those mistakes.

ELEMENT OF ENGAGEMENT:

Q&A, Live Poll, Informational Handouts

BIO:

Brittany Littleton owns and operates Littleton Legal. She started the firm to help Oklahoma families and businesses thrive through efficient and effective legal services.  Her practice focuses on business law, estate planning, elder law, trust administration, and probate. She is a frequent public speaker on the intersection of estate planning and entrepreneurship, and how proactive planning can empower families, businesses, and communities.  Brittany is a firm believer that clients are best served when their legal, financial, and accounting advisors are working collaboratively to strategize and advocate on their behalf.

Prior to forming the firm, Brittany was an associate at a busy boutique estate planning firm specializing in high net worth planning.  She gained valuable insight into how overwhelming estate planning and business succession could be for families and business owners, and the struggles that resulted from the lack of planning.  As the owner of Littleton Legal, she expands on that experience to help individuals and families from all walks of life plan for life’s unexpected events.  Brittany loves helping families find peace of mind through designing and building thoughtful estate plans that are unique to each family.  She carefully listens to clients to understand their needs and goals.  Her aim is to develop positive and productive long-term relationships that can not only avoid probate and minimize family strife, but can often preserve legacies, assets, and values across multiple generations.

An active participant in the local entrepreneurial community, Brittany is passionate about helping Oklahoma businesses prosper. Her extensive experience as a former In-House Counsel and Chief Operating Officer for multi-million-dollar businesses gives her a unique perspective when acting as outside general counsel services for local companies.  Her experience includes authoring business plans, developing branding and marketing strategies, finding new business opportunities, organizing funding, developing processes and procedures, navigating compliance with regulatory requirements, and negotiating mergers and acquisitions.

Throughout her legal career, Brittany has strived to maintain the highest professional standards.  She is an active member of the following professional and community organizations:

·         WealthCounsel

·         National Association of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA)

·         Oklahoma Bar Association (Sections: Estate Planning/Probate/Trust; Business Law)

·         Tulsa County Bar Association (Committees: Probate/Estate/Elder Law, Corporate Law)

·         Oklahomans for Equality Business Alliance

·         Tulsa Interagency Council

·         Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance – Tulsa Chapter

·         36° North – Tulsa’s Basecamp for Entrepreneurs

In her free time, Brittany volunteers as a Board Member for the YWCA Tulsa and the Broken Arrow Camber, works with her partner on real estate investment projects, collects local art and house plants, and is Aunt Mitmee to lots of little people. If you know Brittany personally, then you also know she’s a huge Pearl Jam fan; she’s seen them in concert 48+ times.  If you visit her office, she’ll probably casually brag about and then not-so-subtly expect you to admire her autographed Eddie Vedder poster.
